It is native to Kinmen and Matsu; on Taiwan's main island it was introduced. Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act protects it as Rare and Valuable Wildlife. Taiwan's Red List rates it Nationally Least Concern. Worldwide, the IUCN Red List rates it Least Concern. International trade in it is controlled under CITES Appendix II.
