Privacy

This describes what the site actually collects and does with it. Taiwan's Personal Data Protection Act (個人資料保護法) applies.

What we collect

The coordinates, time, category and notes of a report, plus any photos you upload. An email address is optional, used only to follow up, and is never shown on the map or included in public data. If you sign in we store your account id so your reports can be listed back to you.

How photos are handled

Photos are shrunk in your browser before they leave your device, and the hidden details a camera stores inside a photo (called EXIF, including the device model and serial number) are removed. Before that, if the photo holds the place and time it was taken, the report form fills them in for you; you can move the place on the map, and nothing about it is sent unless you send the report.

Location data

True coordinates are stored in the database only. The public map shows a location adjusted according to the species' sensitivity rating. See the About page for how that works.

Checking that a report comes from a person

Anyone can send a report without an account, so without a check the form would be flooded by automated programs. Before a report is accepted, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that it was sent by a person rather than a program. To make that check, Cloudflare receives your IP address and technical information about your browser; we send it nothing from your report. We also count how many reports each IP address, or each account if you are signed in, has sent recently, so that no single address or account can flood the form. That count is not stored with your report and is never shown.

Retention and deletion

Reports are kept indefinitely, because their scientific value comes from accumulating over time. If you have an account, you can delete it yourself at the bottom of My reports: your reports stay, with nothing linking them to you. If you want a report or a contact email removed, get in touch.

Third-party services

The site uses Supabase (database and file storage), Vercel (hosting), OpenFreeMap and OpenStreetMap (the base map), Cloudflare Turnstile (the check described above), and Modal, which runs our species-identification model: the first photo you add to a report is sent there, already shrunk and with its hidden details removed, as soon as you add it, so the model can suggest a species; it is not kept there. Map tiles load from OpenFreeMap through Cloudflare, and OpenFreeMap may log IP addresses for up to 30 days when investigating abuse.

Sharing with research partners

We share a record's exact location with a research partner only if you ticked the box for that record on the roadkill page. The only partner named there is the Taiwan Roadkill Observation Network (TaiRON, 路殺社), run by the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, and nothing has been sent to it: that waits until TaiRON agrees to take records from this site. Your email address is never shared.

Usage statistics

We count page views through Vercel Analytics, to see how many people find the reporting page. It sets no cookies, creates no cross-site identifier, and records nothing that identifies a person — what we see is “the home page was viewed N times”, not who viewed it.

Cookies

Only essential cookies. If you sign in, one keeps you signed in, and two more are used only while you sign in: a security check for the sign-in link, and the page to return you to afterwards. If you switch language, one remembers your choice until you close the browser. No advertising or tracking cookies are used.
