This season's goal

One shared target for everyone reporting in Taiwan: put a first record into 5 km squares of the map that have none at all. Anonymous reports count exactly the same as signed-in ones.

A first record from a square that has never had one is the most useful thing anyone can file.

Where the map stands

5 km squares with a record
1,347
Counted from public records that carry an exact location.
species and subspecies with a record here, of Taiwan's animal species and subspecies
504 / 44,216
Counted the way the species directory counts them, with each subspecies as an entry of its own. The second number is how many animal species and subspecies the Taiwan species checklist (TaiCOL) lists, counted the same way.

7,185 public records are left out of the squares above, because the location shown is blurred: the species is protected by law or rated sensitive, or the record has not been identified yet. Crediting a blurred location to a 5 km square would credit the wrong square. Blurred records still count in every other statistic on this site.

Why squares, and not records

A target counted in records rewards volume, and the cheapest volume is the same roadside verge photographed again tomorrow. This one counts only the first record in a 5 km square, so a second is worth nothing and there is no reason to sit on a site you already know. It is also what the data is short of: most records here come from a handful of surveyed roads, which describes those roads rather than the island.

There are no points, rankings or prizes here. A reward for filing reports would also be a reward for careless or invented ones, and every record here is public.
